  • IUCN study confirms vertebrate extinction crisis
    One in five vertebrate species are threatened with extinction according to a landmark study launched by the IUCN on Wednesday 27th October 2010 at the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in Nagoya, Japan. Read more on ARKive

  • Rat eradication planned for Pacific Island
    The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has announced plans to remove non-native rats from the Pacific Island of Henderson, in an attempt to prevent the global extinction of a unique seabird, the Henderson petrel. Read more on ARKive

  • WWF Releases its Living Planet Report 2010
    On Wednesday 13th October, at the Wildscreen Film Festival, WWF launched their Living Planet Report 2010, an analysis on the health of the planet and the impact of human activity, with the key finding that humanity’s demand is currently exceeding our planet’s capacity to sustain us.   • One in five plant species under threat
    At least one in five of the world’s plant species are at risk of extinction and a further ten percent will soon become threatened unless action is taken. A report released by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with the Natural History Museum, London, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has shown that even plants that are locally considered common, such as the snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, are at risk.   • ‘Asian unicorn’ found in Lao PDR
    One of the world’s rarest and most enigmatic mammals, the saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), has been captured in Lao Peoples’ Democratic Republic (PDR), more than a decade after it was last seen. Read more on ARKive

  • Turtles in trouble
    More than a third of the world’s 280 freshwater turtle species are threatened with extinction, according to a new analysis by Conservation International (CI). CI’s latest assessment, undertaken as part of World Water Week, explains that the catastrophic decline of the world’s freshwater turtles is primarily being caused by the unsustainable harvesting of turtles and their eggs for food, and for the lucrative pet trade.   • Rare giraffe added to IUCN Red List
    A rare subspecies of giraffe has become the latest charismatic mammal to be added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. With fewer than 670 individuals remaining, Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) has now been classified as Endangered by the IUCN, making it the second most threatened of the nine recognised giraffe subspecies.   • Search begins for the world's 'lost frogs'
    Set to take place on an unprecedented scale, an ambitious hunt for some of the worlds rarest, most threatened and quite possibly extinct amphibians has begun. Scientists in more than 14 countries are endeavouring to survey sites around the world, in the hope of rediscovering lost species, as well as those that continue to sit precariously on the brink of extinction.   • New species of titi monkey discovered in Colombia
    During a recent expedition to the largely unexplored Department of Caquetá in Colombia, researchers from the National University of Colombia surprisingly discovered a species of titi monkey new to science. Read more on ARKive
